Lignières was first owned by the Linieres family up until the marriage of Jacqueline de Linieres and Edouard de Beaujeu. The land was then passed successively to the families of Amboise, La Rochefoucault and Brichanteau.

A strong castle was built by the family of Linieres. The castle was bought in 1653 by Jerome de Nouveau who decided to drestro it to build a more conventional house, which was more comfortable and modern. After his death, the propperty was bought by Princess Palatine, who then passed it on to Colbert, who doied a few days after the signing.
The castle then remained in the Colbert family. It is currently owned by the Prince Sixte Henri de Bourbon Parme.

The covered market, built in 1592, still hosts the famous fairs and markets every Monday.

The population of Lignières today is around 1600.
